Is it possible to have chord symbols appear below the selected note after pressing Ctrl+k, rather than above?

Go to Style -> Edit text style -> chordnames and change Y to 7.00 or 8.00 depending on your lowest note. The chordnames you already entered will not move but the new ones will be below the staff.
Excellent, thanks very much. That's the only issue i had with an otherwise excellent piece of software. Really happy i downloaded it.
