I have MuseScore 1.0 working flawlessly on Windows 7 64bits. Is this when you install or when you tried to install MuseScore? Where did you installed MuseScore? Did you have another version installed before?

Thanks. The program never opens- the startup logo for Muse Score appears, then a second later, the dialog mscore has stopped working appears. I DID have the Digidesign Refresh MME service which is mentioned as a known incompatibility , because like the hapless user in the thread there, I had made the mistake of trying to install a wrtched MBox on my computer. but even after I disabled this service, the same problem occurred ..
I suspect I have exactly the same problem. I downloaded for the first time, tried to compile, and got the simple error message that is attached. Any thoughts please? I run Windows XP.
Thanks
@threni Can you share a screenshot of your window popup as well?
Thx!

The attached screenshot 'Muse error.jpg' in the above post is the only thing that came on screen so I have no further clue as to what might be going on here. I know I have a lot of programs on my PC, but I would have thought that many other Muse users do too, so can't work out whether there might realistically be a conflict somewhere. I have tried a total uninstall using Revo Uninstaller, and then downloading again, three full times now, and I always get the same error popping up.

Could you check you don't have any software/hardware mentioned in http://musescore.org/en/handbook/known-incompatibilities

Thanks for that - I see that it is probably my Samson USB Microphone, driver name "Samson ASIO Driver", samsonasiodriver.dll that is causing the problems. This is a pity since I use it a lot and don't really want to uninstall it.
