Change Verse 2 et al to Verse 1
I had 3 verses of lyrics in a repeat but then copied out the same to separate them so that there is variation in the arrangement for each verse. But the Verse levels remained the same and the vertical alignment is giving me problems, e.g., if I select them all and apply an offset, they are sent to their three different defaults plus the offset. I am trying to align them to one line. So I would like to change Verses 2 and 3 to Verse 1but cannot see how to do so.

Currently no direct way to do that, I'm afraid.

I'm glad to see the ability in the Inspector to switch lyrics in one verse to other verses, in the nightly (3.0) version!
It's not available in MuseScore 2, but MuseScore 3 will allow you to change the verse of selected lyrics via the Inspector.

That is good news but of no help right now. Is there a way to redefine the default vertical position of each verse for a given score?

More or less—in Style > Text..., increase the "Vertical offset" value for "Lyrics Odd Lines" and decrease it for "Lyrics Even Lines."
EDIT: My mistake, I see you have three verses to deal with. In that case, it may be complicated. My best suggestion:
1. Use Edit > Tools > Copy Lyrics to Clipboard, and paste them into a text document.
2. Add the hyphens and melismas as needed in the text.
3. Clear out the verses you don't want in the score.
4. Select the syllables that you want from the text document, then click the note where you want them to begin, and paste repeatedly.

Thanks for the suggestion. I got as far as pasting the selected lyrics into a text editor and decided it was less trouble and less risky to simply retype verses 2 and 3 into verse 1.

That's an option, too, if it's a manageable amount. ;-)
