Changes in Preferences retained after cancelling

1) edit > preferences
2) uncheck or check a few check boxes
3) press cancel
4) edit > preferences
expected: changed checkboxes have gone back to what they were because the changes were cancelled
actual: changes 'cancelled' are still there
