Score isn't playing properly
Please excuse any errors in terminology, I'm self-taught.
My score begins with a single quaver at the end of the section. I'm using an 8/4 time signature, which means that I need to make up 7.5 beats. I tried a double-dotted minum rest and a semi-breve rest, which appears to keep the quaver at the end of the section, but when I play the score, the quaver plays too early, leaving more than a quaver's length of time between it and the next note, even though there are no rests in between.
Any ideas?

Could you attach here your score?
use the "File attachments" option at the bottom of the page, just above the Save and Preview buttons when you're typing your post.
Indeed, attaching the score would allow us to see what is going on. but I can also advise, if this is literally the first note of the song, don't use leading rests like this: simply set the actual duration of the measure to 1/8 by right clicking it and going to Measure Properties. This is how a pickup measure (aka anacrusis) is created, assuming you didn't set it up in the Create new Score wizard as it seems you didn't.
