Selecting two notes and pressing "+" adds an tie to a THIRD note
Even more annoying: If you try to remove this tie by selecting the second and the third note, then pressing "+" again, another tie will appear. The only way to get rid of it is to delete it and probably reload the whole file because deleting the tie does not have any effect on playing the song until the file is reloaded.
The screenshot should be able to explain it quite well; if you need the mscx source file, I can attach/link one, too :-)

May I direct you to the handbook entry for ties.

You are getting this behaviour because you are not using ties in the way MuseScore expects.
It could be argued of course that the behaviour should be the way you thought it should work. This would need further discussion by the MuseScore community before being implemented.
If you feel strongly enough about it, then maybe you should open a discussion in the Feature Request forum.
For the time being though, I'm afraid you are stuck with the current behaviour.
