How do I add a new instrument line mid-way through a piece?
I would like to add a descant line for a vocal piece that comes half way through the song. I don't want to have the whole first half written in rests which would look awkward and I cannot add it to the current soprano line because it will be moving in a different rhythmic pattern than the other sopranos. Can someone let me know how to do this?

Add this vocal as new instrument, then activate hide empty staffs (and maybe deactivate don't hide empty staffs in the first system) in style->general...:

OK so I get how to add a staff and what you said about hiding the bars seems reasonable but now I can't get it to put the descant line at the top. When I add it, it just puts it at the bottom so I have soprano, alto, piano, descant (from top to bottom) which is really odd. There is clearly some easy way to reorder the instruments but I can't seem to find it in the handbook...

Open the instrument window (via menu edit->instruments... or shortcut "i"), select the instrument and move it by pressing the symbol with the arrow up in that window.

Thank you! We have success! I entirely missed the up and down button until now... oops.
