[Solved] Need advice on how to create this long complicated bar
I have attached a jpeg of a bar from Beethoven Piano Sonata No 3, first movement.
I hoped to handle the small notes by treating them as trailing grace notes (I have done this with smaller "cadenza" style bars), but in this case, I am stumped because:
(1) The bar is so long that it won't fit on one line
(2) Splitting the bar so that just the crotchet followed by its trail of 80 grace notes still won't fit on one line
(3) I can't attach the grace notes on the lower staff to a note because there isn't one to attach them to.
I've tried entering the notes in a "free-form" bar and making the heads small, but it looks horrible, because the beams stay full size.
Any suggestions from gurus would be greatly appreciated!

Attached is a rendition of the right hand of the sonata. The first thing I did was to change the actual duration of the measure by right click, select measure properties and change actual duration to 81/8 (I think that's the right number). I started entering the notes. As I went along I adjusted the beam properties since all the beamed notes were being connected. Once the notes started going off the side of the screen, I picked a note that I wanted to start the next line and went to the menu Edit->Measure->Split Measure Before Selected Note to continue the measure on the next line. I then made the barline at the end of the line invisible. I continued in this manner until the measure was complete. At one point I ran out of measure, so I went back into measure properties and increased the actual duration a little bit more.
If you want the line breaks the same as in your picture, you will either need to change the paper or other layout options.

In the Inspector, after selecting the notes, put a check in the box labelled 'Small' which appears under 'Chord'. Do not check the box under 'Note' as only the noteheads will become small , beams stay full size.

I have also thought of an easier way. This measure is mostly divided into 4/4 groups (with the exception a couple of sections). You can simply start entering it into 4/4 measures. When you get to the trilled whole note, you will need to adjust a measure duration as above so the note either starts the next measure or ends in the current measure. You will also need to adjust the final measure so the final run of notes will be in the same measure. After this you can go back and hide all of the extra bar lines so it appears to be one measure. The advantage of this is that you will not have to adjust beam groupings. You can then select all of the measures and press { until the stretch is removed and it takes up few line if you want to.
