Cowbell

• May 26, 2013 - 02:55

I need to add a cowbell to my drum score, but there is no cowbell on the drums palette. I searched the manual and didn't find anything. Searched the forums and one guy linked to a tutorial video, but I have a hard time with videos because I have turtlenet (satellite, one step above dial-up).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can add a cowbell to your score by adding another stave with a cowbell on it - you will need to scroll a long way down the Unpitched percussion list to find it.

Or you can right click the stave and choose Edit Drumset to add cowbell to your palette.

You will need a list of the MIDI note number assignations which you can find here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_MIDI

To save you looking this time though the note number is 56.

It would really be best if you could watch my tutorial video on the subject though.

Come back here if you're still stuck.

I really don't want to add another stave just for a cowbell. So I will go with your second option.

I am copying a score which uses circled x's for the cowbell. I didn't really think that was right, so a quick google search turned up that I should use a triangle in the first space. Well, that corresponds with your note 56, but it is named "Ride (Bell)." I try changing the name, but when I mouse over that instrument in the palette, it still says "Ride (Bell)." If I exit the program and reopen, then go to Edit Drumset, the name has changed back to "Ride (Bell)."

I guess funtionally it will still work. I don't care about midi output, just print. But it would be nice to change the name.

Oh, and what's the deal with MuseScore making the triangle note heads cockeyed?

Did you save your Drumset?

MuseScore automatically loads the default drumset when you begin a new score.

But if you have saved the one you edited you can simply load your custom drumset in the Edit Drumset dialogue.

You will then need to save your score then restart MuseScore.

The attached score has a bar of cowbell in the first bar and should show the correct names in the drum palette, although MuseScore is insisting on naming Ride Cymbal 2 as Ride Bell despite being edited so that will be one to pass on to the bug solving team :)

If you open the Edit Drumset dialogue from this score you will be able to save this edited drumset on your own system for use when necessary.

THe waqy the drum set dialog is presented is a little backwards in my opinion. You don't want to star by editing drum not 56 - that is defined by the General MIDI standard to be Ride (Bell), and you shouldn't be attempting to change that. All you are supposed to do in this dialog is change what different notes *look* like. So what you need to find the note that General MIDI defines to be cowbell, and change what *it* looks like.

Sorry, I'm not always at my computer when posting and can't always check everything. I just assumed MuseScore had it right and that the OP was making the easy / common mistake of starting with the shape he wanted and then trying to change it into a different sound, when the dialog is designed to work the other way around. And yes, I realize the dialog is also for assigning sounds not already in the palette. I was just observing that the method by which you do so is backwards from a lot of us might expect (start with sound then choose how you want it to loo rather than vice versa), and I made the mistake of assuming that was the case here as well. I apologize for the confusion.
