Add an extra voice/stave mid score. Choral piece. SATBB
I am composing a piece for choir. I plan have the 2nd Tenors sing a line and then have the first tenors come in and sing a line over them; but having them both on the same stave creates issues because they voice cross temporarily and adding lyrics to it just creates a mess. How would I do this? I just want the stave to be visible till the part where it is needed and shown, and then hidden for all the other parts. Thank you.

Use style->General... and check "Hide Empty staves". If you don't want them visible in the first system, uncheck "Don't hide empty staves in first system." If there are staves you never want hidden, right click them, chose staff properties and check "Never hide"

What if there are a few staves that are empty, which are part of the main instrumentation, which I don't want hidden? Is there a way to selectively hide certain staves which are empty and not others? Thanks.

As I previously stated, "Never hide" in staff properties will cause a staff to NEVER be hidden. If you want a staff sometimes visible even though there are no notes, you will need to put a note in an unused voice, make it invisible by pressing V and make it not play in the inspector.
