Suggestion to standardise either inches or millimetres

• Nov 22, 2017 - 01:03

I've been trying to figure out the right settings to use in MuseScore to create a few graphics that will be useful to import into other scores.

It seems that in order to preserve the size of the graphics relative to the stave space units when exporting to png and then reimporting, the export resolution must be exactly 180 dots per inch, but the stave space scaling must be exactly 1 millimetre.

Now I've figured that out, I can make my graphics without any problem, but maybe there's some proper reason to standardise to either inches or millimetres that I haven't thought of?

I'd vote for millimetres being the standard, with inches being the approximated one, for what it's worth (,:

Us oddballs here in America use inches not millimeters. We're the holdouts preventing standardization. There have been many attempts to change our minds but we're determined to be us (or maybe US).

Centimeter and Inch are widely used in the world.
It is important for the user to use it comfortably.
We can not say: "Use the unit I use, because I want to standardize it"
If necessary we can use any of these (or sometimes both of them).

Some things are standardized the reverse way you want: dpi, ppi, screen sizes (inch; diagonal).
Some things were created later and used as is: Kilobyte, Megabyte, Bit, Hexadecimal, Octal, Binary, Hz, Decibel...

Also note names:
in French, Spanish, Italian: Do (Ut), Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si (Ti) ;
English, American: A, B, C, D, E, F, G; German: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H
Accidentals:
Bemol, Diesis; Flat, Sharp; -es, -is
As you see, there are several forms for each.

Obviously the standards are useful to support, but MuseScore already supports converting between them for the most part. So my suggestion is making one of them the mathematically accurate one for internal use, while keeping the other as optional for the user (who hopefully won't mind if something is 0.0005 of a millimetre off).
