MIXER settings

• Aug 4, 2018 - 11:36

Dear Sirs
This is my request which I hope will be considered for the benefit of all Users :
Actually (versions 2.2 but also in 3) it is a pain to load and to set instrument sounds in the mixer:
a small window opens where all the available soundfonds are mixed and not in alphabetic order
so that it takes half hour to set them on the score.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO LET A STANDARD WINDOW OPEN WHERE YOU CAN SEE FOLDERS AND SUBFOLDERS
THUS CHOOSING SOUNDFONTS VERY EASILY . NOW IF WE HAVE MORE THAN A SOUNDFONT COLLECTION
IT IS EVEN IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW WHICH ARE THOSE LISTED.
..PLEASE A SIMPLE STANDARD WINDOW SHALL BE THE BEST !
Thanks

Reorganization of the Mixer is already being considered, but I'm a bit confused. Changing sounds in the Mixer would normally be pretty unusual, something you do very occasionally and certainly would never spend half an hour on. I get the sense you might be trying to use the Mixer for something that is better achieved through other means - like just choosing the correct instruments in the first place. Can you explain a bit more about what you are trying to do?

Personally, I use Instrument Changes and the mixer for synthesizer patch changes. For example, I change the instrument to Piano and then change the sound in the mixer every time I want the synth to play a different sound. It gives me more options than simply choosing the instrument itself. For me it works, but it might seem convoluted to others..

No, that's a good approach when writing specifically for synthesizers. But in most other situations it wouldn't be necessary to mess with the Mixer much. But indeed, if you have multiple soundfonts loaded and you wish to play with which soundfont provides the sound for a given instrument and want different soundfonts for different instruments, you do need to do this, and the current layout is not ideal. So maybe that's what is meant? As I said, there is already work proposed being done in this area. BTW, the ordering of the sounds is according the General MIDI standard and should be the sme for all GM-compatible soundfonts, and is actually much more logical than alphabetic (eg, the main piano sound is at the beginning of the lsit whether it is called "Piano", "Grand Piano", "Stereo Grand Piano", or "Jimbob's Special Awesome Piano"

Yes , my suggestion was referring to the problem I find using soundfonts different than dedicated FluidR3 or GeneralUser (with these there are no problem : I select the Instruments in "Stave Properties" and in the Mixer
they are automatically placed correctly). The problem is if we use different soundfonts (for example I frequently use "Squidfont_orchestral.sf2" ) or using Sfz through Zerberus Tab . In this case even if I set each instrument through the "Stave Properties" in the Mixer I find "Violins" on all the staves and I need to load the correct instrument individually for each staff through the Mixer
