Resetting measure numbers
I'm trying to make a piano score containing several short pieces in a single file. I would like to get a layout where the first piece ends halfway through the second page, and the second piece fills up the rest of the page. Is there a way to format MuseScore to reset the key signature and measure numbering at the beginning of each successive piece? Or do I just have to break up the set and use separate files for each piece?

This is the purpose of the section break - see the Breaks & Spacers palette. Does all that and more.

So it says, but my new section is 32. Should be 1, according to this link.

Could be you turned off the measure number reset in the properties, then. In order to do more than guess, we'd need you to attach the score.

Try unsetting and resetting the last section break. I've had some cases where Musescore seems to not do the reset at a measure break automatically. In the score I'm working on right now, the fifth section break didn't get a count reset automatically.
[Edit]: As soon as I start adding contents to the measures they go back to continuous numbering.

Hmm...
I see 4 folk songs.
First section break between songs 1 & 2.
Second section break between songs 2 & 3.
Third section break between songs 3 & 4 (incomplete).
So, three section breaks total.
Where, then, is your fifth section break?
The ones I see have measure numbers correctly reset.
Your attachment's title reads thus: "section 5 measure break doesn't reset measures.mscz"
Be sure you are using a section break rather than a "measure break" (whatever that is).

It should be 4th section break not 5, but it's obvious from the score what I'm referring to. But I've now added another 5 sections and I'm still seeing the measure numbers ping-ponging between resets and continuations. Toggling the prior section breaks on/off only repairs the problem until I add more note content.
It's perhaps a problem with my program
OS: Windows 10 (10.0), Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.6.2.548021803, revision: 3224f34

Sorry, I see all measure numbers correctly reset, so not obvious to me.
Please provide accurate information and a precise procedure to follow to produce what the issue is?
EDIT:
I've added notes to the incomplete song (after the 3rd section break), and still see correct measure numbering:

The measure numbering is changing dynamically, so I might have to record the screen to show what I'm seeing.
After the section break is created
1. The next measure is either 1 or X+1 (where X is the count of measures to section break).
2. If X+1, then toggle section break off and on again. First measure will now have number 1
3. Begin filling the new section with content. At this point I see the measures flipping between base 1,and base X+1. Also: sometimes the first set of measures are 1-based, but after the next line break, the measures are showing as > X. So there the first region is 1...n, but is then X+n+1. As I continue to add content, the measures flip between these states in a pattern I can't repro.
