With tricks, but more simply by adding an image.

Thanks! However, when I add an image, the staff expands a lot. Is there a way to prevent this?

Maybe by disabling Automatic Placement. The first element is made by pressing 'Z' and adding lines. The others are images (I've omitted the 'transparent')

If the image you are adding collides with other things, then indeed Automatic Placement spaces things to avoid this. So, don't place it in a way that collides with other things, or - if you want it to collide - you can disable automatic placement in the Inspector.

I've turned off automatic placement on the image, but the measure keeps expanding. Is there a way to turn off automatic placement on the measure?

if you attach your score we can understand and assist better. I just remembered there is a bug recently fixed where disabling autoplace on images attached to notes doesn't work. Workaround is to attach to a rest instead (like an invisible one in another voice).
