Instrument types
I would like to set 4-part recorder music. is it possible for me to create my own template score, defining the instrument ranges and names? Or is there any other way of being able to get the effect I need?

Yes! Create a score and save it in the location indicated in Edit(MuseScore on Mac)->Preferences Templates. It will then be added to the custom templates available. Give it a meaningful name for the template because the name of the file is what will be displayed in the New Score wizard.

Thanks, that will start me off. However I also have the problem that the instruments I can see to choose from do not have the same note range as the recorders I am using and this causes difficulties when entering the music. any ideas?

Right click the instrument's staff, choose Staff/part properties and change the ranges. The changes will stay in any template you make from it.
