Note Input with Different Values

Let's just say that I want to add a half note, and on top of it, I would like to add a dotted quarter note. When I try to manually add a half note and then above it, a dotted quarter note, MuseScore 3.x is changing that half note into an eight note to compensate for the dotted quarter I just added. How would I avoid this problem?
