I found a way of getting it back -- following the procedure outlined in this thread: https://musescore.org/en/node/276312
It seems to have been 'StaffTypeChange' parts of the code that caused it to crash Musescore 3. I've removed these and it now seems to be ok.
It opens fine in the release candidate for MuseScore 3.3. The problem seems to be the staff type change at the beginning of the score, that causes a crash in current version but won't in 3.3 and later. But a staff type change at the beginning of a score is unnecessary, it doesn't do anything different from just setting staff properties on the staff itself. Unfortunately, while it opens in 3.3, it crashes when I remove the element. So I' e removed it manually, editing the MSCX file within the MSCZ archive.

Thanks Marc! What happened is that I had put the stafftypechanges in, thinking this was the way to create an ossia that 'appeared' midway through the score. Then I discovered the feature to hide individual measures, so I realised that I didn't need to have these in -- and I was trying to remove the stafftypechanges when it suddenly crashed and wouldn't re-open the file! What drama. Thanks for all your help. Constantly learning about Musescore, and generally very happy.

For an ossia, don't hide measures individually, make the staff a cutaway in the staff/part properties and MuseScore will automatically hide unused measures.
