From time to time I stop being able to hear playback. Is there a toggle function I might have clicked by mistake?

In the mixer (F-10) there are buttons to mute/solo instruments, but without knowing more about your system, it's impossible to say for sure that it's not some other issue.

Does the playback appear to be functioning - the cursor following the score, etc.? Next time this happens, look at View / Synthesizer and tell use what you see. Also, if you've changed speakers/headphones, you might need to tell MuseScore, go to Edit / Preferences / I/O and select your current device, and/or hit the "Restart Audio and MIDI Devices" button.

Do you have a keyboard with a mute button on it? If so you could be pressing it by mistake.
