Plugin API for Fretboard Diagrams

I'd like the ability to create / read / edit fretboard diagrams via the plugin API.

I'm a developer and I'm willing to spearhead this if someone more experienced with the codebase can give me a high-level overview of what an implementation might look like (files that need to be modified, newly created, hooks, etc).
