Not resetting parameters when changing instrument?

Whenever I change an instrument in the score, it automatically does at least three things:
Resets the previous panning info
Resets the previous volume level
Changes the previous instrument patch

Many of my scores already have instrument patches set, panning info in place, volume level in place... But then I need to change the staff to the correct instrument -- such as Trumpet. Is there a way to change the staff to another instrument without it automatically changing the previous info?
