Why are you removing a rest? It's supposed to be there. It indicates the absence of a note. You can use 'v' to make it invisible if you don't want to see it.
You use Ctrl-Del to remove time, whether that be rests or notes is irrelevant.
Removing time however is supposed to be a less common action compared to removing sound, which is why the former is Ctrl/Cmd+Del and the latter a plain normal Del.
As mentioned, removing a rest with Ctrl+Delete isn't something you should normally be doing. It leaves you with too few beats in the measure. So probably there is something else going on, something you did incorrectly that resulted in a rest you didn't wish to see, like perhaps using Insert mode, or perhaps using multiple voices within first filling voice 1. If you attach your score and explain which rest you want to delete and why, we can understand and assist better.

It looks like I have to hit ctrl-delete to remove rests. That seems cumbersome...
