Windows 10 Pro. Greyed out playback controls, synth
been here to trouble shoot: https://musescore.org/en/node/96811
tried uninstall and instrall 3.5, same problem.
any further advice?

"In case of interference with other programs, esp. on Windows, go into your soundcard configuration from Control Panel and ensure that the Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device in the Advanced tab of both Playback and Recording is unticked." Also, the Sweetwater link is [EDIT: now] provided there.
Please understand that OS's are different, hardware setups are different, and installed software differs among users of MuseScore. Solutions, therefore, may also be different. That's precisely why someone spent the time to create that "How to". It frees up forum volunteers to help users who truly have "tried everything", and need further advice.

Hmm...
I've followed that link from somewhere in the forum before. I distinctly remember that intro.: "Before showing you how to disable Exclusive Mode, you need to learn what it is and how it works. " followed by the actual instructions. If that link wasn't in the "how to", then it was in some other post.
In any event:

Yes i did see that, but it says go into your "soundcard configuration from the control panel" and that did not connect to me with "open your sound settings." When something says to check your sound card, I go to the device manager and look there. Windows 10 doesn't have a control panel when you left or right click the start menu. So, that paragraph cold be rewritten to make it easier to connect to "open your sound settings" instead of "soundcard configuration"

For future reference, Windows 10 does indeed have Control Panel. In the search box in the left of the task bar type "co" and it is the result that comes up. I save mine to the taskbar so that it is readily available.

That "How to" offers solutions for various scenarios since it relates to not only the MuseScore program, but also supported operating systems, concurrently running software, and different hardware configurations. As a result, it has a lot of info. and any irrelevant solutions can intentionally be ignored depending on the reader's specific situation. I thought you had overlooked the "Control Panel" solution because it worked for me when I suffered the same issue, and used Control Panel (not Device Manager)..
Anyway...
As it turns out, jeetee has recently added a Sweetwater link which explains 'Exclusive Mode' and shows an alternate (easier) method via right clicking the speaker icon instead of going through the Control Panel.
