Musescore4 - how do I write for treble or bass clef only, but with a piano sound. Tried hiding empty staves on the piano, but this does not hide them on the opening stave.

On the left of your score, where it has tabs for palettes, instruments, properties, select Instruments. Your piano instrument will have a caret between the eyeball symbol and the Piano name. Click the caret. You'll be able to make either or both clefs visible (with the eyeball symbol. HTH.

Hi Steve
Am I looking in the wrong place here? I'm attaching a word document where I've taken a screen shot of what I am seeing. Thanks for getting back to me, as a teacher I am using Musescore frequently for GCSE composition work and classroom based work.

Hi Steve - I've just found what to do - I think you used the term caret - so I went looking and tried, and now found this that works. Huge thanks - so much appreciated. Jo

Try pressing F7 (on Windows) to display the instruments in use. Hit ALT-View to see other things that you might want to display (and their shortcuts).
