Can't Get Sound Even from Reinstalled MS MuseScore-3.6.2.548021803; Midi Playback also broken
In attempting to free some space on my C: drive (an SSD drive), I uninstalled a number of programs this morning. Yesterday I also moved all of my Musescore scores from a conventional hard drive to an SSD drive.
In the process of the above -- probably the step of uninstalling programs -- I've managed to render MS 3.6 so that it won't produce sound -- although it will export a playable MP3 that does produce sound. MS 4.02 also produces sound (including from a score imported freshly from 3.6 without further change by me, which score will not now produce sound in MS 3.6). I've tried all different output settings in MS 3.6 under Edit/Preferences/IO, and can't get a peep. The last thing I did was reset them to the defaults.
I also did a repair on MS 3.6, and then a complete reinstall, neither of which solved the problem.
A seemingly related new system issue is that MIDI files will not now play in either the Windows Media Player or the VLC Media Player. The former gives a message "Server execution failed"; the latter gives two more helpful messages:
MIDI synthesis not set up:
A sound font file (.SF2) is required for MIDI synthesis.
Please install a sound font and configure it from the VLC preferences (Input / Codecs > Audio codecs > FluidSynth).
Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format "MIDI" (MIDI Audio)
Yet the sound fonts seem to be available to MS4, as an imported score with instruments set to MS Basic plays just fine.
Anyone know what I might have done, or more importantly, what I can do to fix things?
Many thanks!

I found an old Musescore support message that suggested series of things to try. Exercising the button within Edit/Preferences/IO did the trick, at least within Musescore.
Still not quite sure what caused the problem, or how to fix it in VLC or Windows Media Player. But making progress.

Now both the Windows Media Player and the VLC Media Player are working after another system restart. Oh well.
I think I might look into how I can get a better midi soundfont or engine or instrument associated with both of those apps, though. Their current midi rendering is pretty lame. I already tried pointing VLC as the Musescore soundfonts; it sounds great for a few seconds, then crashes. But these are now relatively minor problems.
