What is the new shortcut for Shift+[ ?

• Aug 1, 2023 - 17:18

Hello

In MS3 I could use Shift+[ and ] to increase/decrease the "size" (or "crowdedness") of measures, and I could do it for selected measures or all measures. Very useful to make a score fit on a precise number of pages, or to spread out some notes where visually necessary. This shortcut does nothing on MS4. Where is that function now?

Thanks
Samuel

The stretch commands are "{" and "}" just as they were in MU3. If those happen to be Shift+{ and Shift+] on your keyboard, then that should work. But there are hundreds of different keyboard layouts out there, so if the default doesn't work in yours, just go to Edit / Preferences / Shortcuts and customize them.

Thank you for all your hard work answering questions on this forum -- it is appreciated. The shortcut on my computer is indeed { and }, although I have to press Shift+[ and ] to get { and }.

(I could not get this function to work in MS4 except in one or two measures. That said, this was a particularly stubborn file with a single 1-beat measure dangling at the top of page 3...)

The reduce stretch command doesn't magically force measures onto a different system or page. It simply "please reduce the minimum width for this measure by 10%," and if that allows it to now fit on a different system than it previously would have, it will move, but otherwise, there won't necessarily be any obvious change. Sometimes you might have to reduce stretch by several 10% notches before it will fit somewhere else, and sometimes no amount of reducing stretch will allow it to fit because even with the notes physically touching each other there just wouldn't be room.

If you attach your score and explain in more detail what you are trying to do, we can understand and assist better.
