Jump Repeats play dynamics incorrectly

• Aug 25, 2023 - 18:59

Hi, I've noticed a bug when using "DS al Coda" or any other text jump repeat; the program will occasionally use a dynamic marking in a whole different measure during the 2nd time (after it jumps back to the Segno symbol). In addition, the coda can often be an entirely different dynamic than marked.

I've attached an example of this bug in a score I quickly made.

Maybe MuS 4 is different to MuseScore3.6.2 in this case.
The only thing I found which is not working is the hairpin in measures 9 and 10. I don't know how you got the 'ff' joined to the hairpin. It could be a new feature of MuS 4. In 3.62. a hairpin must end one note left of the next dynamic sign.
I modified this by deleting the hairpin, set the last note of m. 10 to 'ff' and add a new hairpin from m. 9 to beat 3.5 of m. 10. As I found this works as expected.

Compare my attached modification.

Right, that solution does indeed work.
Also, I'm pretty sure attaching dynamics to hairpins have always been a thing? The way I've been doing it is selecting a bare hairpin and then clicking a dynamic in the palette.

This bug also tends to be annoying when for example, there is just one whole note instead of multiple different notes in the measure before the coda. In that case, I'd have to notate it like dotted-half note tied to a quarter note, placing the ff on the quarter note, which isn't very professional. I also found that this bug tends to mess with percussion instruments like the suspended cymbal, making it all choppy during playback.

Again, I can only report on my 3.6.2 experiences.
I never used the 'begin text' or 'end text' of a hairpin. But it seems to be only a graphical element without an effect on the playback. Even if you don't use the end text of the hairpin: it must end one note left of the new dynamics.

And yes, you need a workaround if the measure with the 'D.S. al Coda' is a whole note. First, with a piano, you can't make a crescendo after striking a key for a whole note in, say, pp - at least I have no idea how it should be done. But with wind instruments, of course, it is possible. So I used a trumpet in my example.

In this case I would use another solution that looks and plays perfectly:
Insert an empty measure after the 'D.S. al Coda' measure. Put the 'ff' dynamic on that rest. You can then hide the bar line and the rest. This measure is never played because the 'To Coda' jump then goes to the following measure. Exclude this inserted measure from the measure count to keep the correct measure numbers.

If in other cases this extra measure is played: shorten it to a 128th rest, for example. Yes, this is not perfect then, because you will hear a very short rest.

I can't comment on the problems with a suspended cymbal, as I lack the experience.
