How best to use grace notes?
Forgive me if this was once asked. I searched but could not find it.
I thought I knew how to add grace notes to a score, but recently, things are going wrong.
I thought that if I added a 1/16th grace note to any other main note, the grace note would sound as a 1/16th note in front of the other note, and that would be that. However, I have discovered that not to be the case. Instead, the grace note in front of a whole note, half note or quarter note does not sound directly, but simply forces the main note to change its timing. Check it out. Here is an example:
In the first measure, the 1/16th grace note rings fine as a 1/16th, in front of a 1/8th note.
In the 2nd measure, however, the 1/16th grace note forces the half note to delay and not ring until almost beat 3. To hear the effect, here is the actual Musescore file:

Help! If this is correct, has it changed from a year or two ago? How do I add a grace note to a longer note and get it to ring immediately?

Here is the chapter on grace notes in the handbook. I guess you want an "Acciaccatura" and not an "Appoggiatura" as you show above.

Yes. When I added a Acciaccatura grace note to a whole note, it played fine. I was using the "1/16th before" grace note from the menu. I guess it defaults to Appoggiatura.
Thanks. I will remember that.
Yes. You want the grace note with the diagonal line through the stem.
