Controlling vertical spacing
Please see the attached file. There is a large vertical space between the top two staves which I would like to reduce, but I don't understand where it came from.
Also, I would like to increase the space below the vertical text frame that is between staves two and three, but again do not understand how to do that.

Either use "Format -> Style -> Page" and then "Disable vertical justification of staves".
or apply "Staff spacer fixed down" to the first measure in the "Breaks & Spacers" palette and drag the line upwards. This allows you to change the spacing individually.

Simply drag the frame handle downwards.

in the Properties panel for the text frame, increase the Gap below
