Muse Sounds Instrument "Mute" Lacking basic features.
PLEASE NOTE: This is all about the sound font, "Muse Sounds", for musescore 4.

How are you applying the Mute symbol?
If you are using the mute element from the Text palette, then I agree that it has no effect on playback.
Where I would expect to see a mute effect to appear is in the Sound Flag of a Staff Text for the specific instrument. But at present I don't see any "mute" option for either Violin or Trumpet:

Probably we shall see the Sound Flag options extended in later MuseScore releases.

The "mute" playing technique annotation (from the "Text" palette) works for trumpet. But not, sadly, for strings.
