Lost MuseHub Sounds

• Sep 14, 2024 - 14:48

It seems like every time I upgrade MuseScore my scores don't play as intended in the new version. I think it has something to do with the lack of connection between MuseHub Sounds and MuseScore. I have the strings sounds downloaded, and I can see that there's supposed to be an instrument called Violins 2, but I don't see it anywhere in MuseScore anymore. I do have my Sounds location customized, so maybe the communication between MuseHub and MuseScore broke down on the customized sound location? I'm comparing the playback of this piece on the web site to how it sounds locally and it's very different.

I checked the diagnostic menu in MuseScore and saw there was a System > Show Paths command, which I tried. None of the paths refer to D:\ which is the drive where I have MuseHub configured to store my downloaded sounds. But there's no way to edit the paths there, and I don't see a path for instruments. I see a couple for soundfonts, but I don't think that's what MuseHub downloaded sounds are. And like I said, I can't update these paths.

I finally figured it out. Apparently upgrading MuseScore did not upgrade MuseHub and did not integrate with the version of MuseHub I had or indicate that a new version was needed. Also, MuseHub was not reporting that a new version was available even though a new version was available. So:
1. I had to manually go to the MuseHub web site and download it again and re-install it. That upgraded MuseHub. However,
2. The upgrade failed to migrate all my settings/instruments due to a file system permissions error. I'm a programmer and it was telling me what it needed permissions on and the command it was trying to run, and I set the permissions and ran the command successfully, but no amount of manual intervention was working. It continued to report that it could not access my MuseHub Downloads directory (even though I had restored it to its default location before beginning the installation). So, I had to manually re-download all the instruments.
3. Even after this MuseHub reported (after restarting) that it still needed to migrate some settings from the old MuseHub. I'm not sure whether my downloading the new instruments, restarting a few times or closing all File Explorer windows I had open fixed it, but after all those steps this problem did go away.
4. The instruments never got deleted from the old MuseHub default location so I had to manually go delete that directory ("C:\ProgramData\MuseHub" is the old location, "%USERPROFILE%\Muse Hub" is the new location).

Finally, after all this, my score plays beautifully again like it should. If only the software played as nicely! :D
