Writing for kit just got a lot harder, can I go back to the old way?

I have been using MuseSore for around 5 years now, and have been loving it. Though it has had its obvious flaws, these have never been so annoying that I couldn't use the program, and they have always generally been ironed out with new updates.
I have always been able to execute the drums patterns I wanted to create quite easily, as I found the drum input system quite intuitive, and, after a year or two of practise, I was able to use it very fluently.

Then, 4.5.1. The new drum input system is completely alien to the previous one, keeps all of its old problems, and has made itself much more tedious to use. When I want to put a rest into the second voice, and I am currently use free not placement in second (just as I would have done for writing a bass drum part previously), it will always default the rest into the first voice. I have found this very very frustrating, and writing my drums parts for a whole piece (around 5-7 minutes) has gone from a simple and clear maybe half-hour to two hour venture, to writing four bars taking upwards of ten minutes.

I do like that I can place different drums like they were notes on a pitched instrument, but the fact that I can't actually write rests properly means I have to place a note next where I actually want it, place the note I want, then delete the first note, and correct the length of the rest. Every time.
I find myself switching between note input modes frequently, and just generally not wanting to touch drum kit at all.

Is there at all a way I can access the old method of inputting notes? I can't seem to find one.
I really really really love this program, it has been completely invaluable to me over the last 4 years, but kit notation is such a vital part of my compositional process, and it's become borderline unbearable.
