In version 0.9.3 drum notation works best with a MIDI keyboard. Most keyboards have markings to show the different percussion sounds.
In the prereleases for 0.9.4 you can use the new drum palette to enter notes with the mouse. The drum palette becomes active when you select a drum staff. Note that this not a final release and subject to change and bugs.
