Transpose not altering key signature

• May 6, 2015 - 02:20

If I transpose selecting a with CTRL a the key signature is changed as requested in the transpose panel key sig. check box. However, if I only want to transpose part of the score using selection with click and shift click over a range of bars, the key signature change is not shown at the first selected bar and accidentals (in the illustrated example E flat change to A flat, the Ds are shown with a flat marking) and accidentals are added.
I have overcome this problem with cut and paste to a new file with just the bars I want to affect and transposing everything in that file and this works fine, but I do not believe this was intended by selective transposition.
I enclose 3 files to illustrate, my computer is win XP sp3, musescore is 2.0.1.
By the way, I love Musescore 2.

Yes, transposition does not add new key signatures; it only transposes *existing* key signatures. To add a new key signature, just drag one in from the palette. No need to create new scores or copy and paste anything. i assume you want a key signature of four flats starting at measure 41, so just drag it there.

Dragging in the correct A flat key sig does work and it even correctly removes the flat symbols from the D notes. So thank you for that, but I think the check box in the transpose panels would call for that change to be automatic, or at least add something in Katie wardrobes nice video to say you must do it yourself.

Katie's videos are unfortunately quite obsolete at this point - they were done for MuseScore 1.0. The new video series for MuseScore 2.0 is by Goerge Hess. Not sure if he covers this yet. But the checkbox calls for key signatures to be transposed, not added. If there is no key signature there now, there is nothing to transpose.

in my example the next line of the score does have a key signature which I expect to be changed, so there is something to transpose. If the dragging of the correct key signature does everything that transpose was expected to do then isn't it possible to link to that bit of code to complete the task, (I speak from a position of glib ignorance here).

The key signature that appears at the beginning of the next line is not a "real" signature - it's just a reminder. Only the initial key signature and any key signature changes are "real" in this sense. Not that this is obvious from the wording, but anyhow, it *does* work as it is designed to.

The thing is, sometimes you want to transpose a passage without changing the key signature, other times you want to change the key signature without transposing. So it's good that it's possible to separate these. Of course, sometimes you do want to do both. Right now, if you want to do both, and it's not the beginning of the score, just do it separately, but sure, at some point, an option could be added to the dialog to do this.

"Transpose key signatures" check box should say "if whole score" otherwise it is fairly redundant in this case. if the key signature is not real how does the drag key signature have the information to not add flats to notes B E and A and only correct flat signs on D.
While I am happy with the drag a key sig solution, I detect in my included example 'Would you care to dance - 2nd T after' that bars after selected bars have their key signature changed to A flat even though the last 4 bars were not included in selection for key sig drag and drop.
Not much of a problem in my case but unexpected behaviour.
I am aware that among the millions of MuseScore users this has fairly infrequent use.
Thank you for your kind assistance, once again.

It's *not* ony if the whole score is selected that key signatures are transposed. it's *any key signatures within the selection" that are transpsoed. If the selection contains a key signature (a "real" key signature, not the reminders at the beginning of each line), then those key signastures are transposed.

The only "real" key signature in your piece is the one at the beginning. That's how MuseScore knows that Bb, Eb, and Ab don't need accidentals. This would be true whether or not the reminder key signatures were also placed at the beginning of each line.

But some pieces also have key signature *changes* within them - like what you are doing with your piece when you drag the Db/bb key signature in. These are "real" too. If such a key signature change is found *within the selection*, then it is transposed.

So again, it has nothing to do with whether the whole score is transposed. Any real key signatures within the selection are transposed, simple as that.

Drag and drag doesn't work on a selection. When you drag an new signature to a piece, it affects the entire piece from that point to the end - or until the next "real" key signature.
