You can change the staff type to tab by pressing "I" for the instruments window, then selecting one of the tab types from the staff type drop down list. If by "old" you mean, pre-2.0, you;ll first have to to change the instrument to guitar (even if it's already guitar) by right clicking, Staff Properties, Change Instrument.
Or, instead of *changing* to tab, you can hve btoh, with the "Add Linked Staff" button in the Instruments dialog.
Of course, realize that MuseScore is going to have to guess as to which fret / string to use for each note - won't necessarily be the optimum choice. But it's a starting point at least.

Hey Marc, I've got another song that would work better with the linked staff, but when i bring up 'instruments' & click on acoustic guitar( tab) the linked staff button stays greyed out.

Probably it's not a guitar staff - or at least, not a 2.0 guitar staff (might have been created in an older version). So right click, Staff Properties, Change Instrument and set it to guitar.
if that doesn't work, please post the score you are having problems with and precise step by step instructions to reproduce the problem.

I had already reset it for acoustic guitar(tablature), per your instructions. Was that right? Ok, I just set it again for acoustic guitar, then brought up Instruments, & everything is still greyed out except for 'add'. Homeless.mscz
