Getting the Jazz Leadsheet "Look"
HI! I just found about this program and I'm loving it. I'm trying to write a leadsheet to be used for any jazz player. The standard look of a leadsheet has pretty large measures and only around 4 to a line. I'm having trouble finding out how to get something like that.
^^example of the look I'm trying to get.
thanks!

Hi. There are many steps as music is a complex language, as you know. Probably the first step would be to write something, share it here and ask questions. Another great help to me was to read the manual https://musescore.org/en/handbook
Well, a good start would be to create a score based off the Jazz Lead Sheet template, go to Edit -> Tools -> Add/Remove Line Breaks… and add line breaks every 4 measures. ;-)
Welcome aboard...
Yes indeed! That 'lead sheet look' could be replicated in MuseScore - there are 'jazz' fonts for that very purpose.
Please see:

The 2.0.1 version of MuseScore was recently released, so there may exist some improvements and/or slight differences to those referenced pages, which actually refer to the older version of MuseScore.
Among the improvements are chord name entry, as well as changing text styles.
However, the referenced tutorial is a good start, and if you have any further questions please return here with specifics.
Regards.

how does one install a plugin on the mac version? i looked in the application contents and found a plugin folder but the plugins I downloaded don't seem to match the filetype of what the mac has.
edit: i read the handbook and found out. hehe
edit2: actually, no I have not figured it out.

I can't help but I'm looking forward to edit 3.

Never mind plugins—I'm guessing you're looking for "Break Every X Measures," which is mentioned in the tutorial. This is one of those differences between the version of MuseScore that the tutorial is written for and the current version. Instead of Plugins -> Break Every X Measures, use Edit -> Tools -> Add/Remove Line Breaks.

The tutorials I wrote are unfortunately very out of date now; I am planning on updating that at some point. Plugins are no longer needed (or an option, since the plugin format has changed). The plugins I describe - both for adding breaks and for slash notation - have all moved in improved forms to the Edit / Tools menu. Also, some of the limitations and workarounds I describe no longer apply - like, you can now enter chord symbols using any syntax you like, no need to first select a specific chord symbol description file and then be careful to use only those specific symbols.
another question i have:
attatched is a tune I'm working on. it has a triplet pickup to the melody. But the program is treating it as a bar. I want it to be not included in the 4 bars so it retains the form.

You've been working fast. ;-) The trick is to not have that measure selected when you run Add/Remove Line Breaks. So, at this point you'll want to select everything, use Add/Remove Line Breaks to "Remove current line breaks," select everything but the first measure, and "Break lines every 4 measures" again.

thanks so much! that worked perfectly.

One way using the Break every ...., is to first set everything to 5 bars, then select from the 6th bar (click on the bar, not an event) and shift click on the end and set for every 4 bars.
Hmmm. The text is something you will have to play with, but you can emulate this look by playing with the thickness of the note stems.

This is a 2 year old thread. MuseScore 2.1 has a jazz template that already has the "Jazz" look.
