Some Extra Guitar Notations

• Nov 4, 2010 - 02:31

1) for Slides there are 2 common things

For a slide of a whole step that is included in the note duration, a slash added before the note in the direction of the slide. See the ARTICULATIONS section of This document

for sliding between 2 notes otherwise, lines and slur marks are accompanied by a slide notation of sl.
see this for an example.

2) For natural Harmonics the symbol Harm. is added above or below the notes (along with diamond note heads)
For Right Hand Harmonics the symbol R.H. Harm. is added above or below the notes (along with diamond note heads)

see this document for an example in the HARMONICS section

3) extra bend notations: There is already a full bend articulation, the text should be editable or also have a 1/4, 1/2, 1-1/2 bends. There are also some very specialized bend marks for Prebends, Prebend & Release and Reverse Bends. (I have a decent TAB glossary in the back of a music book if you would like examples of these)

4) Lines for Palm Mute and Hold.

this would go in the lines menu. for holding strings and letting them ring. the lowercase word hold, followed by a dashed line of editable length ending with a verticle bar. (Not unlike an 8va line)

hold - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -|

Palm muting is the same only it begins with P.M.

P.M. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -|

Yes, the gliss is good for between 2 notes, and changing the text to sl. works fine.

The workaround for singles is not exactly great, that's a lot of work for every note slide. I found it better to add the "Line" from lines and move it to where I want it. Even still, the slide I'm talking about here is more of a grace note slide. Certainly not desperately needed as it can be done other ways, but maybe worth looking into in the future.

I agree that the four features listed in the original post are very important for guitar.

I'm a C/C++ developer. Do you need someone to write this code?

1) The two types of slide notation described by the original poster are standard and would be nice to have.

2) I'm not too familiar with harmonics since I don't use them very often.

3) I agree that there are two standard ways to represent a bend: with notation that indicates how far to bend (1/4, 1/2, 1, etc.) and with notation that connects two notes, one representing the original note and one representing the target note.

4) These are also important, although I use "Let Ring" rather than "hold."
