How to create taiko compositions using MuseScore?

• Dec 20, 2010 - 14:49

Hi, I'm new to MuseScore. I've a question which I need help on.

I want to use MuseScore to compose Japanese taiko drum pieces, so I downloaded the latest version of MuseScore. However, when I tried to look for it under the category Unpitched Percussion I was unable to locate it. Is it just me or is there something else which I need to install in order to do this?

It is quite possible that MuseScore doesn't have it, as it is unreasonable to try to include every possible instrument that there is. What you might do is use a drum that has a similar sound/staff and then just rename it as necessary. There have been some recent additions made dealing with marching percussion, so it might do some good to look at what's been happening with that (search on here for marching percussion and you should be able to find it).

There are two different problems. Notate the music and hear the result.
To notate taiko, what do you need? One staff ? 2 staves with 1 line ?
Depending of your preference, you can just pick one or more of the unpitch percussion instruments and adapt the drumset and staff style to your choice.

Then, for the sound of taiko, it's another problem and you might indeed want to try another soundfont. For example, I believe PC51f.sf2 has some taiko sounds. You can change the soundfont in Display -> Synthesizer and then associate a sound with a staff in Display -> Mixer.
