moving notes

Hello,
I just started using MuseScore. It's an awesome program, but there's one problem I just can't get around. If I fill in several measures, and then delete a note, it is replaced with a rest, which makes sense. I can't find a way to "delete" the rest, so that the notes to it's right move replace it. Right now, I have to rewrite the entire sheet of music from the deleted note forward, moving each note to replace the rest left by the last note. Is there some way around this?
