A file in M4A format is a sound file, which MuseScore cannot import.
In the past I have tried a few commercial programs to convert sound files to MusicXML (which MuseScore can import). But I have been deeply disappointed with the results.
Other users on these forums have described the difficult process of decoding a sound file into separate instruments and voices as "trying to unscramble eggs"...
