Must I have Musescore 4 to read new sheetmusic?

• sep 30, 2024 - 19:31

I have had my Musescore 3.6 some years, and from 2022 I have bought access to download sheetmusic for around 40 US$ a year. Now I learn that some music is made in a newer version and cannot be read by MS 3.6.
I upgraded my program to version 4, but I cannot use it without paying around 150 $ a year. Is that correct?

No - and yes.
Firstly, you don't have to pay anything for any Musescore version!
But it is true that scores created with version 4 of Musescore cannot be read with older versions (except with Musescore 3.7 Evolution by Jojo Schmitz).

Access to musescore.com has paid and free options, but this has absolutely nothing to do with the musescore app for Windows, Linux and MacOS. However, everything concerning musescore.com is not covered here ...

MuseScore 4 (now called MuseScore Studio) is free and can be downloaded from here:
https://musescore.org/en/download
It can co-exist on the same computer along with MuseScore 3.
There is no need to pay anything to use either.
The only thing that may require payment is downloading scores from musescore.com.
