MuseScore 4 keeps crashing

• Mar 23, 2023 - 19:38

As the title states, I've been having a problem with MuseScore 4 constantly crashing. This is what happens:

 - I open MuseScore and load a score with Muse Sounds active.
 - I hit Play on at least one instrument with Muse Sounds.
 - The score plays for a few seconds, then the program crashes.

Running MuseScore in a terminal, I get this error when the crash occurs:

Anyone have any ideas?

Does this happen with any score? Are these scores native to MU4. What are your computer specs? Perhaps post a score that does this.
"- I hit Play on at least one instrument with Muse Sounds." What exactly does this mean?

Pardon me for not clarifying.

 - Crashes happen on any score, regardless of origin (MU3, MU4, etc.).
 - Crashes only happen when I'm using Muse Sounds (not the default instruments).
 - And by the way, this is quite a new problem. MuseScore was working fine for me up to about two days ago.

Please let me know if you need anything else clarified.

I think i have figured out my problem. One of my percussion lines glitched out with some random sounds and i think that caused a corrupted line of code in the file because when I start to after that part in the song i will play through the song with no issues. So tomorrow I will be rewriting the beginning chunk in a new file and see if that makes a difference. Also, when I try uploading the file to musescore the audio upload doesn't upload past that point then it crashes.

I did try a reset, but it didn't help. However, I was playing around with some other scores just now and discovered something: the crashes only happen on scores playing Muse Sounds instruments at very high speeds. For example, I have a piece set at dotted-quarter-note=120 BPM, and the score crashes every time I play it. But another piece I have set to quarter-note=80 plays just fine. Any thoughts?

I've had musescore crash on my so many times already and once the entirety of my song just vanished even though I had autosave on

For what it's worth. Once you get to the point of functional playback of your work-in-progress score, save it. Exit MuseScore program. With a file manager on your system, find that saved score, AND COPY IT to the same place, with a different name, i.e., "piano_french_horn.mscz" --> "piano_french_horn_safety1.mscz".

In researching to provide you some (possible) help here, these two links talk about this issue along with 'autosave'.

https://musescore.org/en/node/52116
https://musescore.org/en/node/346587

In the 2nd link, Marc Sabatella's comments are the most clear (to me). It may help to see "file manager" point-of-view. Though in Ubuntu Linux, I believe this applies significantly to macOS & Windows. My screen captures show Mu3 scores, but this still applies to Mu4.

See the ".mscbackup" folder in the 'Scores' folder. I've picked an arbitrary score "2ww_pno_num1.mscz". Note its last modification is 12-12-2022... Inside the ".mscbackup" folder is a similarly-named score ".2ww_pno_num1.mscz," which has a last modification of 12-4-2022. Thus, if the main score vanished, there is a backup score in a different location, albeit older.

Good luck.
