Rules for grouping rests in odd time signature
I'm writing a piece in 10/8 time with eighth notes grouped 5 and 5. I've been able to set the time signature's beaming rules so that eighths are automatically beamed in this fashion, but what about rests?
So far, it's giving me five quarter-note rests by default; I'd prefer something like [dotted quarter, quarter, dotted quarter, quarter].
I can adjust these rests manually for each bar, but is there any way of changing the default arrangement?

Unfortunately there is no single note or rest with a duration of 5. A use for a half-dotted note if there ever was one but no such thing exists. Your 3+2+3+2 is really the only way but implies a compound pulse which is not what you want.

Thank you – in fact that's exactly what I want! But my question was, is there any way to make MS arrange my rests in this sequence by default, to save me manually setting them bar by bar?

Hi Steve. This works well for my notes, which are beaming the way I wanted, but it doesn't seem to affect rests, which still come out as five quarters! Might there be some other way?

Set the rests for one measure, then copy that measure throughout the score before entering the notes.
