importing midi

• Jul 4, 2023 - 01:37

Hi,

I am trying to import midi to make a score in musescore 4. I found instructions for doing this in musescore 3 and there was a panel where you could configure how musescore interpreted different aspects of the midi. I looked in the musescore 4 guidebook and it was basically like "coming soon". Am I missing something? Is there gonna be a similar functionality? do we know when it is coming? Any work around in the meantime that isn't just like fix the million errors in translation? thankies muchos

Just bumping this up in case anyone has any idea of if/when this functionality might be coming. I'd rather not use musescore 3 as I am new here and I'm only starting to get the hang of musecore 4 now. thanks.

You can follow progress of the MS4 MIDI Import Panel development here:
https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/issues/11918

MIDI import is already well supported in MS3.
See handbook entry: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/midi-import

You can run MS3 and MS4 on the same computer without conflict. Just remember to keep your MS3 scores completely separate from your MS4 scores (which happens by default if you use the pre-assigned folders defined by MuseScore).

Download and install MS 3.6.2 from "Older and unsupported versions" here: https://musescore.org/en/download#older-versions
... and you only have to learn how to use the MIDI Import process in MS3, nothing more!

Regarding the import of MIDI, earlier you wrote:
I did it for one piece and I just fixed it as I went, but I'm going to be doing it a lot going forward so I was trying to figure out the best workflow.

If the source of the MIDI files can instead provide you with MusicXML files, your job will be easier.
See:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/file-formats#musicxml
and read the brief statements about MusicXML and MIDI.
