What's my dynamic

• Oct 29, 2017 - 22:55

Is there any quick way to see what dynamic (f, mf, etc.) a given measure of a given staff is in? I find myself continually asking this question, since it's very easy to lose track of what the current dynamic is in a score of any complexity where instruments come in and out, and it can be very laborious to search back for the most recent dynamic setting. If there is no way to do this, maybe a feature could be added.

Interesting idea! The information is obviously available within MuseScore, but I don't know a way to get at it. What you imagine the UI for this feature looking like? And I wonder what else might be included? I suppose it could simply be shown in the Inspector along with the velocity settings.

What do you do when the first beat of the measure says "p" and there is a crescendo to the 4th beat that says "ff"

In the inspector I would expect it to be shown with the selected note. The inspector can be always visible, measure properties requires a right click and select from the menu.

If the current dynamic is given in the measure properties box, I think it would be acceptable in cases where the dynamic changes within the measure to give the dynamic of the first note and document in the handbook that that is how it works. Maybe an asterisk could be used to indicate that the dynamic in that measure changes.

FWIW... as a visual cue, you can select all dynamics and change the color:
