Splitting Barlines Between Instrumental Families
Have searched in the online documentation, but cannot find how to do this...
I've an orchestral score and would like to be able to split barlines vertically, between instrumental families. Thus the barline between bars 1 & 2 would stop below the bassoon and start again with the first horn. How should I do this?

Double click the barline, drag the handle downward to extend or upward to "unextend" (?), it snaps to the staff automatically so you don't need to be too precise about it. For more, see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/barlines#connect-barlines
Note the templates should already do this, so if you start from one of them, you should have a good starting point already.
