Custom Staff/Sounds
Hi there! I am not sure if "soundfonts" is the right heading for this or not. However, I am writing a piece for a live percussion ensemble with "junk" elements. 55 gallon plastic barrels, soup cans, metal pipes, etc. I am curious if there is a way to create a custom staff that I could assign different sounds to. Happy to use sounds within the library. I can use bass drums, tenor drums, ribbon crashers, brake drums etc, to mimic the sounds of the "junk". I am just curious if there is a way to create that custom "instrument" that would allow me to write and playback on one common 5 line staff.
Thanks!!!

Hey, thanks! However, that won't exactly accomplish what I want. What I would like is to be assign specific sounds to specific lines/spaces in the staff. I.E. F = Bass drum, B = Marching Quad Tom 2, D= Marching Quad Tom 1, High F = Quad Spock 2, High A = Ribbon Crasher, High C = Brake Drum
Any way to do something like that? Assign specific sounds to specific positions on the staff?

Waiting for a better response...
In a stave (e.g. Cello Steel Drums) I can insert 4 Voices;
Click on the measure, double-click on Instruments (Text Palette).
You should simultaneously have 8 'Instruments', try opening Mixers and do some experiments.
Just one idea

Idea 2
The alternative workaround could be invisible instruments and a stave with notes made mute.
I hope there is a better way

Yes, this is exactly what you can do if you can find or create a soundfont that has all the sounds you want collected into a single "drumkit". If you're saying one of the extsting drumkits available (either in MuseScore_General or one of the MDL soundfonts) has all the sounds you want, then all you need to do is use Edit Drumset as described in the Handbook under "Drum notation" to customize your drumset definition to associate the sounds you want with the notes you want.

I created a sound font in viena with the sounds I want. How do I associate the sounds in the new soundfont with the existing instrument in Musescore? There is not an option to create a new or custom instrument. So I am assuming that you some how associate the sounds in your sound font with an existing instrument. However, say I add a drumset to my score and click "edit drumset" I am given the choice for 4 voices for each sound. I am totally lost on how to associate the sound I want to a position on the staff.
Sincerely any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Assuming you've loaded your soundfont in View / Synthesizer, then you need to associate the drum kit in that soundfont with your instrument in View / Mixer. Edit Drumset is then about editing the display of each note and saying which pitch within the selected drum kit you want associated with each note.

I am so sorry to be such a pain, but I desperately want this to work! So, I got my new "instrument" to show up in the mixer, but I am still lost as to how to make those sounds activate on the staff. Maybe it is complicated, maybe I am just a dummy. I used Sibelius for years with Virtual Drumline. Trying something new and feeling like a newbie all over again!
I sincerely appreciate your time and patience. Again, any help would be so appreciated!!!

No worries! You're probably very close. Attaching your score would help, although without the soundfont, we won't be able to tell for absolute sure. Basically you need to be sure.your soundfont's kit is selected in the Mixer, and then the actual drumset pitches need to match up with those in the soundfont. Hmm, also if your soundfont is SFZ as opposed to SF2, be sure the audio files for your soundfont are present, not just the SFZ itself.
