replacing bars with empty space?

• Jan 8, 2019 - 16:27

I'm working on a piano piece and towards the end the bars are looking disproportionately long in terms of the previous layout. I've played around with breakers but always end up with at least one bar that seems out of proportion. The only solution would seem to be creating a space at the end of last system of the piece so the bars will fit in better, but I can't see how to do this. It seems possible because on previous scores a space at the end of a system has appeared without me intending this, so how can I do this intentionally?

please see uploaded score p.5, last 5 bars of piece 2.

thanks.

Append a horizontal frame to the end of the score and adjust the width of the frame so the orphan measure looks the way you want it to look.

thanks mike - I can't figure out how to do this. the problem seems to be that when I append a frame it is added on to the end of the complete score (i.e. the end of piece 4), whereas I want to create the space (an adustable margin) at the end of piece 2.

In that case insert a horizontal frame. It will appear before the measure where you insert it. You can then drag a system break from the Breaks and spacers palette to the frame to put it on the end of the line. You can then adjust the width of the frame. FYI, the frame is only visible on the screen, it won't print.

thanks again, but I don't really follow this. when I put the frame before the last bar of the piece I get a gap where I don't want one, and if I drag a system break to the frame it makes things worse. could you possibly show me on the score I've uploaded what you have in mind? what I'm looking to do is create an adjustable margin after the double bar line at the end of the system, so that I can squash the preceding 5 bars together a bit.
