Transposed part?

• Apr 8, 2019 - 02:28

If I create a score and then generate a part from it, any future change to the score will be automatically reflected in the part.

That is good.

However, I would like to have the part transposed (perhaps even in a different clef) without causing the original staff in the score to get transposed. I would like to keep my score "in C" (written as pitched) and still have changes to the score automatically updated in the transposed part also.

Is this possible? Is there a documentation page the tells me how to do this?

It sounds like you write your music transposed, that is the concert pitch button is not pressed. If you click the concert pitch button you will see all instruments in concert pitch as you are describing.

Indeed it does work this way, but there is a known bug in 3.0.5 (already fixed for the next update) where if you save your score with concept pitch enable, it can mess up the transposition in parts. Best not to generate parts until you are done editing your score (good advice anyhow).

Here is an example of what I was aiming to do.

I create a score consisting of a solo and accompaniment...
MarchesiScore.JPG

MuseScore can create the separate solo part for me...
MarchesiSolo.JPG

This part remains linked to the score. If I make a change to the solo in the score, that will be automaically copied to the solo part. That is good. I like that.

I also wish to distribute solo parts for other instruments, appropriately transposed. A part for trombone would look like this...
MarchesiSoloBass.JPG

However, if i make that change to the separate solo part, it is also copied back to the score...
MarchesiScoreBass.JPG

I would prefer the Score stay as originally written

I would also like to include parts for other instruments.

It is quite common for publishers of "student" music to publish a score with piano and solo in C and also include solo parts for several transposing instruments like Bb Trumpet...
MarchesiSoloTPT.JPG

and Eb Saxophone...
MarchesiSoloSAX.JPG

Ideally, it would be possible to have the score in its original notation AND the several parts all in the same file and linked, so that if the end user wanted to add an articulation or ossia or other edit, it would bubble out to all the solo parts.

Maybe there is a way to do this already?

There is no way to do this and keep them all linked.

There are two ways to do this without having all of the parts linked.

Method 1: Add each of the instruments, copy and paste the notes, open the instruments dialog (press i) and remove the check from visible. Open the mixer and mute the invisible part so it doesn't play. You can extract all of the parts before the invisible step to make sure everything works properly.

Method 2: Extract parts. Select the tab for the canto. Right click the staff and change the instrument. Use File->Save as... and only the part will be saved, you may need to fix the name of the file before clicking save (or OK depending on OS). You will then have a file with only that part.

Just thinking out loud...

For parts that are merely transposed and use the same clef as the line in the main score, this probably would not be a major difficulty to add... it would be a part like parts are now, linked to the score, except that it knows it is supposed to visibly transpose itself by an amount that is a property of that part.

For parts that would use a different clef or might use clef changes that are not built into the main score, that would be a bit trickier.

Your idea has been thought of before. Perhaps allow a type of linked staves that allows you to put different instruments on the second, third and so forth staves. The idea is that you would be able to make these linked staves invisible and not play so they do not affect playback.

Another idea that has been floated is to allow the user to unlink parts from the main score. This would allow you to change the instrument in the unlinked part and it not affect the main score. This would have the disadvantage, that changes to the part in the main score would no longer be transferred to the part.

In any case, implementing these ideas requires someone willing to spend the time to write the code for these rather complex features.

For what it's worth, this feature exists in Sibelius, on the Parts tab where it's called "Copy and change intrument".

I imagine this would be quite an effort to add to MuseScore since it affects the data model underlying a score. Nonetheless, it would be very valuable to me, personally. I often have a score for, say, sax quartet, and would like to add transpositions for brass ensemble or wind ensemble. I have to go through the quite laborious process of copying/pasting the music into "invisible" instruments, and re-do it all if I have to revise the score -- which happens quite often. Arranging music is not a one-way process for me, since the musicians will often give me valuable feedback after first rehearsal.
So, adding this feature would be a great enabler for me to make the switch from Sibelius. I generally think MuseScore has many advantages over the very quirky UI of Sibelius.

Is there a bug/feature ticket for this that I can vote for? I'm not sure how the software development process works for MuseScore.

In the screenshots, I have a Cornet 1 part for Soprano Cornet (Eb), and add a copy of it transposed for Cornet in Bb, which gets named "Cornet 1 in Bb". When I update the score, or the Eb part, the Bb part is automatically updated.
