Playback is not working

• May 1, 2019 - 03:58

My entire playback bar is greyed out, and so is the synthesizer option in edit. I've already tried resetting to factory defaults, doing a completely fresh installation of the latest version, and downloading and replacing the default sound font, because even after the fresh download, that folder was empty. Filling it with the MuseScore_General.sf3 file didn't do anything to help either. I'm trying to use this software to do an ISU for school, but it's kind of useless without the ability to play it back.

I'm having the same problem as dowmills11. The solution in the link you gave does not work for me. I'll be interested to here if it worked for dowmills11. I have already tried all the other things he listed.

I hope someone is reading this thread. I just had a crash of 3.1 Beta. I got a request to file a crash report, but it failed because.....? I don't know.

Here is what I wrote in that report that I could not send:

I had just re-set preferences to default, in an effort to get playback to work. It had been a problem in version 2.3.2 as well. I then tried to install version 3.0.5. Would not install. Got error message about missing file or driver. I didn't know what to do to fix. I saw 3.1 Beta and installed it without problem, and playback worked again, for a while. Now, playback has stopped working again. Synthesizer is greyed out again. When it crashed, I was trying to go back to default preferences one more time, and it just crashed and disappeared from screen. We kind of NEED playback, so please figure this out!

I haven't heard of it causing a crash, but I suspect your sound driver is 32 bit and needs to be upgraded to a 64 bit version to work with version 3.0.x.

Windows is the only operating system that allows crash reports to be sent, and I haven't heard of a report of it not working before. Perhaps you can make sure your sound driver is 64 bit, install 3.0.5 and then force musescore to crash so you can test the crash reporting function.

Thanks, Mike.

It is an older machine that I upgraded to windows 10 from Vista. I'm not sure what the sound driver is or how to upgrade that, but I'll try to find out. I had been using version 2, then 2.3.2 without any problems. I went to version 3 simply because score playback had ceased to work, only to find that it is still a problem in 3, 3.05 and 3.1 Beta. I have seen a number of other folks are having the same problem. No luck so far with any of the suggested fixes or workarounds.

So in case anyone is having this problem, what worked for me is just updating my software (windows 10). I was scheduled for an update and it wasn't working before the update, then afterwards everything was working. Hope this helps.
