Can the Style dialog be made non-modal?

• Jan 7, 2020 - 14:29

It really impedes my workflow that for every change I need to close that dialog.
And when I reopen it doesn't even remember where I was adjusting settings last time.

As of 3.4 (beta), the dialog will remember its last page. Also, since 3.0, the dialog has been "live", meaning the changes take place in real time - no need to close the dialog at all if you're making a bunch and want to check the results. For the most part, though, one also shouldn't need this dialog that much, since most of its settings can be made directly in the (non-modal) Inspector via the "Set as style" buttons.

Can you explain your use case in more detail, so we can better understand how these features don't already solve your problem?

I know that many of the changes are live, but for instance I can not scroll the page under that modal dialog, so if the change affects something that is not in direct view I need to close it. Likewise if a change pertains to both score and parts I can not switch between them.
But ok, I'll learn to make more use of the inspector.

True regarding scroll. I often zoom out before messing with settings where I need a bigger picture, and those are the settings least likely to be found in the Inspector (eg, system distance).

But I can save you some trouble regarding score+parts: no style settings will affect anything but the current score or part :-). But, there is indeed the "Apply to all Parts" button. Hmm, maybe if you used View / Documents Side-by-Side?

Anyhow, I'm not sure what issues might be involved in making the style dialog non-modal, but it's an interesting thought to consider, feel free to submit an official "Suggestion" to the Issue tracker.
